I’m on a roll with upcycling cans! Could be turning into the theme of this year. Since Easter is fast approaching, how can we turn a can into an Easter treat?
My first thought was to paint the can yellow and paint on features to turn the can into a “chick”. That didn’t work out well. However, I wanted a can with a chick! How about a pom-pom chick attached to the can? We can do that!
- 1″ wide strip of chipboard (I used an old cereal box)
- 1/2″ wide strip of chipboard
- yellow yard
- small piece of yellow or orange felt
- orange chenille
- black beads
- glue gun or tacky glue
Cut a length of yarn and lay parallel to strip (use a piece of tape to hold if necessary.) This is the “anchor yarn”.
Wrap the yarn around the strip evenly at least 100 times. Do not wrap too tight as the yarn needs to slide off the strip.
Slip the yarn off the chipboard and tie the ends of the anchor yarn tightly.
Holding the anchor yarn, cut through the loops. Trim the yarn into a nice shape.
Repeat for the smaller pom-pom.
Using the anchor yarns, tie the two pom-poms tightly together.
Cut (1) piece of chenille 4″ long and (2) pieces 1″ long.
Fold the 4″ piece in half and then add a bend to make legs.
Wrap the 1″ piece around the end of the longer chenille to create feet.
Add a dab of hot glue or tacky glue to the top of the legs and place the pom-pom chick on top.
Cut a small diamond shape from felt. Fold in half and add a small dab of hot glue (or tacky glue) and attach to chick’s head.
Hot glue (or tacky glue) black beads to the head to create eyes.
- clean can
- blue spray paint
- pom-pom chick
- treat bag
- tissue paper
- ribbon
- candy
- With the opening on top, spray paint the can and inside. After waiting at least an hour, turn the can over and spray again, including the bottom. Let the paint dry over night.
- Fill the treat bag with candy and wrap in tissue paper.
- Gently place the tissue wrapped candy into the can. Tie with ribbon.
- Hot glue (or use tacky glue) the pom pom chick to the can.
